This small district located on the south-eastern coast of Bali, it includes
the islands of Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Ceningan. The name "klungkung"
means "beauty" or "happiness". The Padang Bai port is a stopping
point on the busy inter-island trade route.
One of the natural highlights of the Klungkung area is the great Unda River
which flows through and passing many scenic villages. The main tourists lures
area the Kertha Gosa, the Hall of Justice, and the Bale Kambang, a
floating pavilion. The Kertha Gosa was a place for the administration of
traditional justice in pre-colonial times by a council consisting of the great
king and his priests. It is decorated with beautiful paintings on its ceilings.
The Bale Kambang ( floating pavilion) stands behind the Kertha Gosa. Its painted
ceiling depict episodes from the story of the Buddhist king Sutasoma, who
defeated his enemies through passive resistance, and of Pan and Men Brayut ,
known as the couple who had too many offspring.
Another beautiful royal temple in Klungkung is the Pura Taman Sari or
Flower Garden Temple, consisting of a peaceful garden and moat around a main
pagoda. The best time to visit Klungkung is every three day, when the
Klungkung Market is in full swing. The market nestles behind a row of
shops to the east of the Kerta Gosa, offers a full range of local delights,
including handmade house-wares, baskets, fruits, flowers, and vegetables. The
row of art shops on the main road in front of the market is well known to
antique and collectors.
Kamasan village, the adjoining village, is a major artistic center, home of
traditional Balinese painting - characterized with wayang style. A few
kilometers east is Goa Lawah, the Bat Cave.
Beyond Klungkung is the coastal village of Kusamba - one of the embarkation
point to Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan .
Penida attracts a number of visitor for its seclusion, surf and
snorkeling. Few facilities exist for tourists.
This area is a paradise for those looking for white sandy beaches with
crystal clear water and a laid-back atmosphere. This small island covered with
coconut trees, mangrove forest, small farms and is surrounded by colorful coral
reefs and sea life - making it an ideal location for snorkeling.
