BARONG DANCE

The Bali Barong is considered as the magical protector of Balinese villages. As "lord of the forest" with fantastic fanged mask and long mane, he is the opponent of Rangda the witch, who rules over the spirits of darkness, in the never ending fight between good and evil. During the Galungan festivals, the Barong wanders from door to door cleansing the territory of evil influences. There are many types of barong , including barong ket (a cross between a lion and a bear - the most common and sacred ) , barong macan (tiger), barong celeng (pig), barong gajah (elephant) and barong bangkal (wild boar).

Barong Dance Performances in Suwung and Kesiman (suburbs of Denpasar), and in Batubulan daily from 9:00 or 9:30 a.m.; in Banjar Abasan, Singapadu, daily from 9:30 a.m., and at Puri Saren in Ubud, Friday from 6:30 p.m
