Bali Indonesia Travel - Komodo DragonKomodo Dragon (Varanus komodoensis) is the world's largest living reptile. It is found mainly in Komodo, Rinca, Padar and Flores Islands, about 450 km east of Bali. There are only an estimated 1,000 to 5,000 of these monitor lizards living today. Both monitor lizards and dinosaurs are belong to the subclass Diapsida ("two-arched reptiles") which first arose about 300 million years ago. Reaching Length of up to 3m or more, and weighing up to 126 kg, these reptiles are swift runners and climbers with great appetites for deer and wild boar. The natives call the dragon ora, or buaya darat (land crocodile). This lizards canft up their heavy tails and beliefs to sprint at up to 18 km per hour, but only for short distances.Dragons are good swimmers and may swim the long distance from one island to another. Like other monitors, they swim by undulating their tails, their legs held against their bodies. They can also dive and stay underwater, some say up to 100mThe Komodo dragon is totally carnivorous and eat anything they can overpower. While smaller Komodos have to be content with eggs, lizards, snakes and rodents, the larger ones hunt deer, wild pigs, water buffalos and even horses. Komodo dragons are cannibalistic, and adults will prey on young ones as well as old and sick dragons. Other dragons may make up to 10% of a dragon's diet. There are few verified accounts of dragons actually attacking living humans to eat them, although like any other animal, they will attack in self-defence.
