Flora and Fauna

Primary Bali's forest covers about 20% of the total area of the island. About a quarter of its forests have been gazetted as natural reserves.

Panthers and leopards still survive but they are getting seriously endangered. Other large herbivores found here are deer and wild buffaloes. Also unique to Bali is the tamed wild ox (called banteng). The untamed version ox can only be found in the National Park. Various species of monkeys, civets, barking deer and mouse deer can be found.

Many species of birds - with the noisy chorus of crickets - you can find at the river bank such as the Kepodang (Oriole birds), Kipasan (Fan-tails) and Kutilang. The paddy fields are a favorite habitat for birds such as Java Sparrow, Parrot Finch and Java Munia .One particularly endangered bird species is the Bali Starling. There are approximately 300 species of birds including wild fowl, dollar birds, blue kingfishers, sea eagles, sandpipers, white herons and egrets, cuckoos, wood swallows can be found.

You can watch schools of dolphins near Lovina, Candi Dasa, and Padangbai. Divers will see many coral reefs contain multi-colored fish , plankton, crustaceans, sponges along the east coast and around Menjangan Island near Gilimanuk.

There are  wide variety of tropical plants in this island. You'll see huge banyan trees in villages and temple grounds, tamarind trees , clove trees , acacia trees, flame trees, and mangroves forests, a dozen species of coconut palms, and  many varieties of bamboo.

Hibiscus, bougainvillea, jasmine, and water lilies, magnolia, frangipani, and a variety of orchids are found in many front yards and gardens, along roads, and in temple grounds.
