Travel to Lombok

Lombok Arts

Lombok is often compared to Bali. In reality however the island is very different from its weserly sister in culture, religion, language and landscape. If Bali is famous with the 1,000 temples, Lombok island is well known with the 1,000 mosques. This island is part of the Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) with Mataram as the capital city. Sasak is the majority ethnic group besides the Buginese, Javanese, Balinese and Arabs.

Cakranegara, at East Mataram, is the main market center and has several Balinese temples. Pura Meru is the largest temple, built by Anak Agung Made Karang in 1720. This temple held Pujawali Festival every year on September or October during the full moon period.

The best beach is Senggigi at Northern Lombok. You can snorkel the sea and enjoy the beautiful coral reefs. 45 km from Cakranegara is the beautiful white-sand beach of Kuta. Do not be confuse with the Kuta beach in Bali. To see sunset, go to the Pura Batu Bolong, a Hindu temple on a cilff. If you want to dive and continue to snorkel other places, take a trip to Bangsal and from here you can depart by boat to the islands of Gili Air,Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan. You may be astonished with numbers and types of the marine habitats.

The centre of Lombok is dominated by the spectacular crater of Mount Rinjani, one of the Indonesia's second highest volcano (after Mt. Kerinci in Sumatra) and a serious challenge to the more adventurous and energetic traveller. The lower slopes of Rinjani are home to beautiful picturesque craft villages where traditional weaving pottery and carving are the local industries, exporting to Bali, Jakarta and beyond.

South Lombok features some of the best surfing in the country, excellent snorkelling and dive sites and great opportunities for big game fishing. Now is an excellent time to visit Lombok. For those looking to escape the crowds and truly relax in the sun, this island is waiting to be discovered and explored.

Getting to Lombok is easy from Bali. There are regular flights from Denpasar, a ferry service and two high speed catamarans, Mabua Express and Bounty Cruises, which leave daily from Benoa, Bali.

Accomodation includes anything from cheap guest house to the impressive Novotel Coralia Resort which offers all the southern comfort you could possibly require for an extended stay.
